SAVE TIME and MONEY WITH ONLINE MEAL PLANNING

By Lauren Lowrey
(WTOL) - Many people are cutting out restaurants and heading home as a way to save money. So where do you start when it comes to planning the menu and making a grocery list?

Faith Hacker has a solution.

"This is an Italian wedding soup, and it's a dump and stir kind of soup," Hacker says from her kitchen.

Once her recipe passes the test in her own kitchen, she heads to her computer where she adds it to a weekly list of 10 or so entrée options. She shows us, "This is what's on this week's menu."

The web site Faithfuldinners.com is one of a handful of new menu planning start-ups.

For just a few bucks a month, you choose your menu for the entire week based on ingredients, and it automatically creates your grocery list. It calculates exactly how much you need.

"I wanted it to be very easy, user friendly. You could spend about 15 minutes and pick out what you wanted to fix all week long," Hacker tells us.

That goes for side dishes, too, like a chopped green salad with a creamy garlic dressing.

Hacker says, "You can add and delete. It's all categorized."  She caters to people on-the-go who prefer meals rather drive-thru or carry out. "They don't have to be a gourmet chef. They can just be a regular mom or dad that's wanting to feed their family a nice healthy meal at home."

If you want to check it out, view the sample menu. It shows you recipes and a sample grocery list. You can also buy a 1-month membership for $8. If you like it, a whole year of meal planning costs $50.

Just remember, if a tightened budget is sending you back to the kitchen in 2009, all it takes is a little bit of planning.

A busy mother of two school-aged children, Faith Hacker, spends a lot of time on sports, school, and activities; unfortunately, that sometimes leaves very little time for meal planning for a mom who prefers to cook dinner rather than pick-up.

"People could not believe that my family ate primarily at home rather than driving through somewhere to pick up dinner," said Faith.  "I began to give some of my friends recipes and menu ideas.  They started asking for more.  Another friend suggested I do a website."  And, thus began FaithfulDinners.com.

Subscribers to the service select meals from the website's collection.  A categorized grocery list is generated from the selected recipes, and subscribers may save recipes to their online recipe box for easy reference.

"Members seem to love how this makes their grocery shopping and meal planning so easy," said Faith.  "I have members who log on everyday to plan their meals, while I have some that do all their planning once a week."  Faithful Dinners is flexible enough to meet the needs of planners and those who prefer to do things on the fly.

The website is expanding to offer more services, such as food and wine pairings and gift subscriptions.  New recipes are added weekly so even the most adventurous palates are sure to find a new taste to pique their interest.

Subscriptions are available for one, three, six, or twelve months.  Visit www.faithfuldinners.com to learn more about the service and view a sample menu.

LEXINGTON HERALD LEADER - Sept. 21, 2008
What's for dinner?  She can help you figure it out
This is one those new businesses that you look at and say, "Wow, what a great idea.  I wish I had thought of that." Faith Hacker of Lexington came up with the idea for a menu planning subscriptions service that provides weekly meal plans, recipes and shopping lists. She started Faithful Dinners after months of providing recipes and menu ideas to friends who couldn't believe her family of four ate regular dinners together at home while juggling school, work, and ball schedules. "A friend suggested that I do a Web site.  I started doing some investigation and found a real need for this service," Hacker said.  "Either we're stuck in the same old routine of spaghetti on Monday and tacos on Tuesday, or we think we don't have time and it's just easier to drive through somewhere.  Or, we want to cook and just don't know how to put it together." Faithful Dinners offers a variety of new entree and side selections each week, and once the selections are made, a categorized grocery list is generated.  A subscription is $7.95 a month or $49.95 a year.  Go to www.faithfuldinners.com.

Geared toward families who enjoy cooking, Faithful Dinners is designed to cut out the stress and uncertainty of planning a week's worth of meals.  The new dinner-planning service provides you with meal plans, recipes, and a grocery list.  The Web site also offers a daily scoop - like, "Eggs will be fluffier if you allow them to reach room temperature before beating" - as well as a list of essentials for the well-stocked pantry.  Their Web site will soon feature tips on food and wine pairing.

How it Works:  Faithful Dinners is a membership based dinner planning service.  Members receive access to the Faithful Dinners menu-planning site, which publishes 10 - 15 menu ideas and recipes for entree and side items each week, along with a grocery list for the items you've chosen and a step-by-step recipe guide.  Faithful Dinners also gives you a virtual "Recipe Box" where you can store your favorite recipes and access them anytime, even after they are no longer available on the weekly menu.

This service doesn't actually provide you with the food and is therefore less expensive than the other services, with monthly memberships starting at $7.95.
